Flagstaff's Haunted Southside Pub Crawl

Ghost stories south of the tracks, drink in hand

Three bar stops on Flagstaff's Southside, the neighborhood where the railroad, the saloons and the ladies of the evening built this town. First round at Mother Road Brewing, last call at Historic Barrel + Bottle House, and the stories told between them by the guides behind Flagstaff's original ghost tour.

Why South of the Tracks

Downtown kept its front windows clean. The Southside did the work.

When the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad arrived on August 1, 1882, the saloons, boarding houses and gambling rooms that served the crews went up on this side of the rails. For decades the blocks around Mikes Pike, South San Francisco Street and South Beaver Street ran as the town's red-light district. Reformers answered with Ordinance Ten in 1895. The district carried on for another two decades, and some of its residents, by local account, never left.

Today the same blocks hold breweries, taprooms and patios, which is exactly why a pub crawl belongs here. The history is real. The haunted locations are real. The drinks are just a bonus.

What Gets Told Between Rounds

Three rounds of stories

Ghost Stories With a Drink in Hand

Haunted history told in the bars south of the tracks, from the first round at Mother Road Brewing to last call at Historic Brewing's Barrel + Bottle House, where a few of the former tenants are said to have stayed on.

Unsolved Murders and Dark Secrets

A wealthy madam found dead in a burning shack in August 1916, a scene staged to read as a murder-suicide, and rumors of a highly placed town figure behind it all. Real case, real newspaper ink, never solved.

Railroad Boomtown After Dark

The railroad arrived in 1882 and unleashed saloons, ladies of the evening and a wild economy south of the tracks. Ordinance Ten tried to end it in 1895. Some of its workers never clocked out.

That is as much as the website tells. The rest gets told standing where it happened, drink in hand.

Stories Unearthed by Local Author Susan Johnson

Other tours chase our route. We wrote the books.

Susan Johnson co-founded Freaky Foot Tours and wrote the books on this town: Haunted Flagstaff, Wicked Flagstaff and The Walkup Family Murders. The Southside is where her research for Wicked Flagstaff kept taking her. The crawl's stories come from that work, told by the Flagstaff storytellers guests name in review after review.
